With 19 years of coaching experience, Todd has dedicated his career to mentoring athletes and helping them achieve success on and off the field. His journey began in baseball, where he played at various levels and coached as an assistant. However, it was the opportunity to step into a head coaching role in softball that allowed him to truly make an impact, learning from some of the best in the business and bringing those lessons to every team he’s coached.
Todd’s resume is packed with achievements, including leading his DeRidder High School team to the 2018 Class 4A State Championship and earning multiple Coach of the Year honors at both the district and state levels. Under his leadership, teams have consistently excelled, earning titles like district championships and even placing in the Top 35 at the prestigious PGF Championships in Huntington Beach, California. He’s coached at the high school level for programs like DeRidder, Hahnville, and now Prairieville, as well as for travel teams including LA Bombers, Marucci Patriots, and SoCal Athletics.
Coach Schulz’s philosophy centers on building strong fundamentals and instilling life skills through the game of softball. He believes that “𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙠𝙞𝙙𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙙𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙨,” and prioritizes accountability, respect, and a positive mindset. He focuses on making the game less discouraging, understanding the mental challenges athletes face, and always emphasizes that “𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨”.
Outside of coaching, Todd is a devoted husband to April, his wife of 19 years, and proud dad to their three kids: Zoey (16), who’s involved in sports medicine and the swim team at St. Amant High School; Tucker (11), an avid gamer and flag football player; and Josie (9), a dancer for “All About Dance.” The family also includes their energetic Labradoodle, Jeter Captain, who keeps everyone on their toes with his playful antics.
Coach Schulz brings a unique mix of experience, passion, and creativity to the program, and we’re so excited to have him leading the team. He is truly the best one for the job and his excitement to be doing what he loves right here in his own community is infectious!
